“Haha you used to be a teacher?”

Let me tell you about that. Back when I was still a struggling copywriter living in a city without a ton of opportunities, I freelanced on the side and taught college writing classes. It was hard* and fun and scary and hilarious and I credit teaching with making me a much, much better writer. Teaching people how to do something is one of the best ways to learn that thing! It’s true! And trying to capture the attentions of a bunch of preoccupied, sleepy, hungover 20 year olds is the most effective presentation skills builder I know of.

Anyway, I taught mostly 3000-level (so, a lot of college sophomores and juniors) Copyediting and Professional Communications classes, some geared specifically towards advertising majors, and some towards future teachers. I taught things like how to structure communications to be clear and effective, how to tailor writing to specific audiences, how to write proposals, how to write effectively in the workplace. That type of stuff.
